TV Drama

L/O -

- Section B looks at the long form TV drama.

- Its 60% of the paper so is worth more marks than the Media Language & Representation unit

- You WILL need to learn and apply academic ideas to this unit

- We have TWO TV dramas.

  • Central Characters - John Snow, Blonde Women
  • Main Storyline - The fight for the Iron Throne, Battle of Realms
  • Sub Plots - Battles
  • Characters - Dwarf, White Walkers

Peaky Blinders -

The central characters that have been portrayed are Tommy Shelby, Ada Shelby (Thorne) and Michael Shelby. They are the three most shown characters and most if not all the dialogue comes from them 3. Based on this trailer, the main story seems to be preparing for the end, this is shown visually and auditorily. Sub plots that I gathered were the fact Michael was out for revenge, and seems to be coming for Tommy which will slow down Tommy's plans. Other characters shown are Esme Shelby, Oswald Mosley and Arthur Shelby

Brody Analysis

What is an Anti-Hero?

An antihero or antiheroine is a main character in a story who may lack conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality

What is a Antagonist?

A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something

How does Brody look like a prisoner of war?

The long, matted hair and the overgrown, unkept beard shows that he has been neglected, Furthermore, the scarring and dirt on his face shows that he has been some what abused and has not been given the bare minimum of personal hygiene. The fact he was locked in a padlocked room suggests they did not want him to leave.

Brody is bought back to America, he is introduced back to his family after being sick in the plane. He seems to be either very nervous or unbothered. He acts like a robot and this is very noticeable within the scenes. The first time we see him act 'normal' is when he begins to give his speech, where he makes a joke. The vice president is made to seem like a media merchant, only caring what the public eye sees. When Brody is told about his mum, he just accepts it and doesn't really show any emotion. He seems distant towards his family, as he didn't move or make the first move throughput the interaction with his whole family, being very uncomfortable and just quite weird.

How is Brody Represented? -

Brody is represented as an awkward and and nervous person throughout the majority of the first episode. The first insight we see of this is when he meets his family for the first time since being found. He seems distant with them and doesn't fill the stereotypical man of a family. His wife and kids seemed to be full of emotion while Brody seems emotionless and almost dead inside. This is due to the effects of war and being 'in the bottom of a ditch for 8 years' as quoted by the superior of Brody in the army. The Van Zoonen theory applies to Brody, because when he is told about his mothers passing, he appears to be emotionless, playing to the role of being a tough, solider, hardened by war, to the point where death does not faze him, this is also shown throughout. He only breaks character when hugging his wife, but soon goes back to being normal again.
